What Is Doli? Meaning & Tradition in an Indian Wedding

Doli originally referred to the palanquin used to carry a bride from her family's home to her husband's. Although traditional palanquins are rarely used at modern weddings, the term doli remains closely associated with the bride's departure.

Significance of Doli

Today "doli" is used more loosely to describe the moment the bride leaves for her new home, whether by car, decorated vehicle, or occasionally still a traditional carrier at more elaborate weddings.

History and Origins

The doli, a palanquin carried by bearers, was a common form of transport for women of status across South Asia for centuries. Its specific association with bridal departure developed as it became a practical way to move a bride to her new home before roads and vehicles made other options available.

How Used In Wedding

It's closely tied to vidaai, and the two terms are often used interchangeably, though doli technically refers to the mode of departure and vidaai to the farewell itself.
